Beyond Human Limits takes visitors inside the minds and bodies of extreme athletes to explore the psychology, physiology, and physicality of some of the most extreme activities in the world. In this high energy exhibition, visitors experience the thrill of extreme sports in exciting, interactive exhibits and immersive environments.
They explore the technology, creativity, and innovation inherent in these sports.
They meet passionate athletes and hear their incredible stories, and take in the artistry, motivation, and thoughtfulness that goes into everything they do. By presenting real facts and real stories, the exhibition helps dispel myths and stereotypes commonly associated with extreme sports and the people who participate in them. The exhibition illustrates that participation in extreme sports requires skill, training, proper use of specialized equipment, and smart decision-making.

The entrance graphic treatment introduces the main themes and topics of the exhibition. A definition of extreme sports is presented and visitors are encouraged to test their balance while walking a slackline in an immersive sensory experience that plunges them into the action!

INSIDE THE MIND AND BODY
Inside the Mind and Body – Central Multimedia Experience, What’s Your Extreme Sports Personality?, Would You Rather?, Inside the Extreme Sports Body, First Responder Interactive, Adrenaline or Dopamine?, Feel the Rush!, Body Sense Challenges: Feel your Fingers, Dot Your I’s, Match Your Moves
This zone pulls together the scientific content that is featured throughout the exhibition. A large multimedia experience brings visitors inside the mind and body of extreme athletes to explore their experiences and motivations. In surrounding exhibits, visitors are encouraged to understand the potential consequences of extreme sports, explore their knowledge of first aid, and test their concentration abilities. As well as learning about extreme athletes, visitors learn more about themselves. They use questionnaires, activities, and quizzes to discover more about their own personality and their inclination to participate in extreme activities!

IN THE AIR
Meet the Athletes – Faith Dickey; Wingsuit Simulator; Wingsuit Design; Innovation and Evolution
In the air explores sports that are executed at breathtaking heights. Visitors learn the mechanics of highlining from a professional athlete, explore the physics of wingsuit flying, understand the evolution of human-powered flight, and take a virtual leap off a cliff to experience the thrill of flying through the air!
ZONE 4
SNOW AND ICE
Meet the Rescuers; Backcountry Showdown; Slope Slide; Kids in the Hills
Visitors experiment with the physics of snowboarding slopes, virtually race backcountry hills as a skier or snowboarder, meet backcountry rescue teams – human and canine and examine some of the real equipment used to save lives off the beaten path. Younger visitors can test their climbing skills on a traversing wall that is just their size.
ZONE 5
IN THE WATER
Immersion Room; Balance Challenge; One Breath
Visitors’ breath-holding and balance skills are put to the test as they are immersed in this underwater realm of freediving on a single breath, whitewater kayaking, and big-wave surfing!

ON THE GROUND
Meet the Athletes – Katherine Beatty and Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham’; Parkour; Spin, Flip, and Roll; Flipped Photo Op
Visitors get moving ‘on the ground’ as they trace in the footsteps of a parkour athlete and put themselves in the action at the Flipped Photo Op. They meet two athletes at the forefront of wheelchair motocross (WCMX) – a sport gaining momentum in the adaptive community. Then slow down the action to investigate the role of gravity and rotational forces in executing tricks and flips.

ON THE ROCKS
Meet the Athletes – Will Gadd; Climb It!; Cliff Camping; Bolts, Nuts, and Cams
A free-standing climbing wall allows visitors to test their grip strength and flexibility while traversing all the way around the wall. Supporting exhibits dig into climbing-related anatomy, strength, body mechanics, and equipment. Visitors can also snuggle into a portaledge and imagine themselves dozing off while hanging from a mountainside.

Be Creative!, Be Yourself! , Be Inspired!
This zone encourages visitors to reflect on their experiences in the exhibition by envisioning the future of extreme sports, creating a personalized vision board of extreme and not-so-extreme goals and reflecting on some of the inspiring messages and imagery seen and heard throughout the exhibition.
